Only Stoke City‘s trip to Ewood Park to take on Blackburn Rovers will go ahead.

Weather permitting, Vale travel to Gillingham and Burton take on Stevenage at the Pirelli on December 28, Stafford Rangers have a home tie against Worcester and Stoke entertain Fulham at the Britannia Stadium.

Leek, Newcastle and Kidsgrove will have to wait until New Years Day before they next attempt to play.

Leek and Kidsgrove clash at the Seddon Stadium whilst Newcastle make the short trip to Market Drayton Town.

Leek Town boss Neil Cox says he is becoming frustrated by his team’s lack of action.

Cox and his troops haven’t played since their 3-1 Staffordshire Cup defeat at home to Rushall Olympic on November 23.

Having fallen victim to the snow and ice last month, Leek’s match at Spalding fell foul to the elements in what was a fifth-successive postponement for the Blues.

Cos said: “We just want to get back out there, the players are itching to play.

“But the way things are going, we might not play again until after Christmas.

“We have been able to train – Dario Gradi let us use the Reaseheath complex at Crewe – but we just want to get back out there now.”

The Blues are due to face Market Drayton Town tomorrow (December 21) but this is a major doubt.

Leek’s next scheduled game after that is the Bank Holiday Monday clash on December 27th with Belper Town at Harrison Park. That game is 34 days since the Blues last kicked a ball in anger – the Staffordshire Senior Cup game against Rushall Olympic on November 23rd.

If the Belper game doesn’t go ahead, the winter weather lay-off could surpass last year’s break of 39 days between the 15th December and 23rd January.

With fixture backlogs inevitable, Town have at least played 17 league games – around average for the division.

Spare a thought for Sheffield FC who most be wondering how on earth they are going to fit in a further 31 league games having played only 11 so far!

As always, let North Staffs Football know your thoughts on matches being postponed and whether non-leagues should start their fixtures earlier?

The only action scheduled for this week is for our non-league side’s.

On Tuesday (December 21) Kidsgrove Athletic, Leek Town and Newcastle Town are all set to host matches but all are a major doubt with the second wave of the big freeze gripping the county.

Kidsgrove Athletic vs Romulus

Leek Town vs Market Drayton Town

Newcastle Town vs Glapwell

All matches are scheduled for a 7.45pm kick-off.

Leek Town manager Neil Cox is keen to get the team back into the routine of playing games after bad weather led to a string of matches being cancelled, writes Danny Cuff.

They went without a game last weekend as their fixture against Loughborough Dynamo was called off.

Cox said: “After a couple of weeks without a game we need to play and get started again.”

Although the results may not tell the same story, Leek Town have been impressing with their performances away from home and travel to Quorn tomorrow hoping to pick up points.

Cox added: “We have been playing our best football away from home and the pitch at Quorn is a great surface to play on.”

Leek currently sit 18th in the table and while Quorn sit 12th, Cox feels that the game is one they can still take points from.

“I have seen Quorn play a few times and I don’t feel there is too much between us,” he explained. “It should be a good game.”

Leek Town‘s groundsman Chris Hermiston has said it could take weeks for his pitch to recover from the recent cold snap.

Harrison Park is still under six inches of snow, with over nine inches blanketing the pitch at the weekend.

Hermiston said that when the snow thaws the pitch might not be playable for some time after.

He added: “The thaw will leave lakes all over the pitch because it won’t be able to get through the frozen ground.

“It is difficult for the players, staff and fans because a lot of games takes it out of the pitch and spectators tend not to come to midweek games because of all the football on television.

“The ground has lost three inches of snow since friday but all the terraces and car park could still be dangerous even when the pitch is clear.”

Leek Town are away to Quorn on Saturday but Hermiston has time on his side as the Blues next home match isn’t until they clash with Belper Town on December 27.

Leek Town travel to Glapwell on Saturday (Nov 27) for the home side’s ‘pink game’, in aid of raising money for Breast Cancer Care.

The home side will be sporting pink kits and some Leek Town supporters can travel to the game on a pink bus, courtesy of Mansfield-based bus company Pronto.

Graham Parker, Glapwell FC’s marketing manager said: “We are hoping to raise over £1000 from the game, we have cut the gate price to £2 so people can come and watch some quality football and also give to charity.”

Leek Town boss Neil Cox remained focused on the match and said his side need to keep picking up points away from Harrison Park.

Neil Cox

He added: “He have been picking up most of our points away from home this season, so we need to keep this going.

“Our pitch isn’t great at the moment so it’s important we play well on better pitches and try to keep a clean sheet.”

The Blues sit perilously close to the Evo-Stik First Division South relegation places in 18th and Cox could be without star signing Anthony Malbon, who is struggling with an ankle injury picked up in last week’s 2-2 draw with Romulus.

Elsewhere, Newcastle Town will be hoping to keep on the coat tails of Barwell and Carlton Town as they sit third.

Greg Clowes’s players answered his call to string a winning run together as they beat Loughborough Dynamo’s 3-1 last week and Market Drayton in the Presidents Cup 4-2 midweek.

Newcastle travel to Belper Town tomorrow (Nov 27), who lost 4-2 to Kidsgrove Athletic last week and if they have ambitions to finish in the top two then they can not afford to drop points against the fifth-placed side.

Dave Walker

Kidsgrove fans have a home fixture this weekend against Shepshed Dynamo. The Grove have suffered a blip in recent weeks and now sit in sixth place.

But they will be confident of overhauling a Shepshed side that have recorded only a single victory this season and sit rock bottom of the Evo-Stik First Division South.

Experienced campaigner Dave Walker will be looking to add to his tally of 20 goals this season and Ricky Bridge could start after his brace in the side’s 4-2 win over Belper.

Kick-off for all the matches in 3.00pm

Leek Town striker Leon Ashman has revealed he is hungry for a regular starting spot after scoring two goals on his 100th appearance for the club.

Ashman scored a penalty and header either side of half-time in the Blues 2-2 draw with Romulus on Saturday.

But he said that he knows what to do to get regular starts in the side.

He said: “The managers philosophy is if you play well you are going to start and if you have any problems you can speak to him.

Leon Ashman

“It was nice to do well but it is a team effort because you can’t score goals on our own, you need others to provide you with chances.

“I knew I was close to my 100th appearance but I didn’t know before the match so it makes it a little bit more special.”

Manager Cox said he was pleased for Ashman and added: “Leon (Ashman) really took his chance. He took the penalty really well and had a great finish and is playing well.”

In 100 appearances Ashman has only started in 48 of those matches, scoring 25 goals for the club in that time.

Newcastle Town boss Greg Clowes has urged his players to keep the winning run going following their 3-1 win over Loughborough Dynamo’s on Saturday (Nov 20).

A goal in each half from Dan Skelton and one from Alan Nagington sealed a comfortable win for Town, and sees them leap to third spot in the league.

But Clowes stressed that a winning run must continue if promotion is the target.

Greg Clowes

He added: “I told the players we have to keep on the coat tails of the two teams above us.

“In the last few weeks we have drawn too many games and the top two haven’t dropped many points.

“It’s not going to be easy to just win every game but what we need to do is put a bit of a run together.”

Anthony Malbon, who had a month-long loan at the club has joined Leek Town for the rest of the season after being released by Port Vale.

But Clowes said he is not disappointed with Malbon’s move.

He added: “I spoke to the lad and I wish him all the best at Leek and he knows that our door is always open if  things do not work out for him there.”

Newcastle face Market Drayton on Wednesday (Nov 24) night and Belper Town on Saturday (Nov 27).

Leek Town manager Neil Cox said that his side’s 2-2 draw with Romulus was the best performance he has seen since joining the club in early October.

A goal in each half from striker Leon Ashman put the Blues into a 2-1 lead, before a spectacular effort meant that both side’s shared the points.

Cox said: “We had to change it around because I am trying to get results and it seemed to work out – but again we just lacked the rub of the green.

Neil Cox

“Leon (Ashman) really took his chance and hit it off with Anthony (Malbon) straight away.

“He took the penalty confidently, his second goal was a great finish and he is playing well and overall it was a great team performance.”

Cox gave a start to new-signing Anthony Malbon, who returned to the club for the rest of the season after spells at Port Vale and Newcastle Town, and Ashman said the pair have a good understanding.

Leon Ashman

He added: “It was the first time I have played with Anthony (Malbon), I was on the bench when he played at Leek last time.

“We seemed to just gell together really well – I held the ball up for him and he did the same for me.”

Leek face Rushall Olympic tonight (Nov 23) and Glapwell in the league on Saturday (Nov 27).

Leek Town turned in a much improved performance when they faced Romulus for a first time ever meeting of the two clubs and in an entertaining game they came from behind to take a deserved point, writes Mike Cope.

Blues ended a run of four straight defeats in a game that saw the home keeper make three top class saves in a 15-minute opening spell whilst both sides won needless penalties in the opening half.

Blues then took the lead five minutes into the second period but Roms equalised with stunning strike midway through the half.

In a rare start striker Leon Ashman took his chances and celebrated his 100th appearance for the club with both Leek goals whilst manager Neil Cox pulled one out of the hat with the surprise inclusion of Port Vale striker Anthony Malbon in his starting line-up.

Leek dominated the opening period of play and might have gone 3-0 up within the opening 15 minutes but for the intervention of the home side’s young keeper.

Five minutes into the game Ashman laid the ball off to Wayne Corden who turned a defender before firing in a fierce drive that had Lewis Exall flinging himself down to his left to save one handed on his line.

Anthony Malbon and Leon Ashman

Four minutes later Paul Taylor drove a free kick to the far post and Ashman rose to head back across the face of goal where Malbon headed inches wide of the upright.

In the 13th minute Exall pulled off another good save from Jamie Haynes and then Ashman’s shot from 20 yards out was blocked and the ball fell wide for Malbon but Exall blocked the follow-up effort.

Romulus threatened in the 15th minute but, after some good approach play, Marcus Brown ballooned a shot over the crossbar.

The home side came close again in the 18th minute when Brown set up Marvin Johnson but his shot was superbly tipped over by the alert Stuart Heeps and when the cross came in, Matt Johnson cleared off the line.

However, the clearance was pumped back into the box and although Roms found the back of the net the offside flag had already been raised.

Leon Ashman penalty

In the 22nd minute a good touch on by Malbon found Johnson on the overlap and his blistering drive was brilliantly tipped round by the overworked Exall.

Leek won two corners in quick succession in the 30th minute that led to a goalmouth scramble but Blues failed to get a boot on it and the chance was lost.

However, Leek fell behind against the run of play in the 33rd minute when Carl Allan impeded Johnson who appeared to be going nowhere inside the box and the referee had no alternative but to award a penalty that was driven home by Marcus Brown.

Four minutes later Johnson and Corden combined to open up the home defence but Exall was alert to the danger and just beat Malbon to the ball.

Johnson was enjoying a lot of freedom down the right flank and in the 36th minute he advanced to the edge of the box to unleash another pile-driver that flew past the keeper and narrowly wide of the far post.

In the 39th minute Robert Evans fired in a free kick for Roms and when Johnson headed it on to Brown he attempted a spectacular overhead kick but the ball fell wide of the target.

Two minutes from the break Ashman chased a seemingly lost cause towards the by-line well wide of the woodwork and Exall unwisely set off in pursuit of him

But, just as the ball appeared to be running out of play, he barged the Blues’ striker and Ashman got up to send the hapless keeper the wrong way with the resulting spot kick.

Within five minutes of the second half, Leek swept into the lead when Johnson’s corner was worked back to him and this time the Blues’ full back crossed deep to the far post where Ashman rose to steer home a well placed header.

This seemed to give the home side a wake-up call and eventually they began to exert some pressure on the Leek defence without really troubling Heeps in the Blues’ goal.

However, Brown had a goal ruled out for a handling offence around the hour mark and a goalmouth scramble sharpened the minds of the Leek defence before Peter Faulds drove a good chance over Heeps’ crossbar.

The home side’s pressure paid off in the 63rd minute when Ashley Jackson raced half the length of the field before smashing the ball high into the net from the edge of the box.

Four minutes, later Ashman almost netted a hat-trick when he got on the end of a Christian Millar corner but his header cleared the crossbar.

A minute later any other referee might have awarded Leek a second penalty following a clumsy challenge by Exall who clattered Ashman inside the box leaving both players crumpled in the penalty area. However, Mr Marsden stopped play for treatment and resumed the game with a bounce-up.

In the 79th minute Corden saw his well-struck shot pushed wide by the keeper and then Paul Taylor almost got on the scoresheet when he got on the end Matt Johnson’s free kick but his diving header fell into the side netting.

Leek kept up the pressure looking for the winner and it almost came in the 84th minute when Haynes attacked the Roms’ box before firing in a shot that just dipped over the woodwork.

In the 86th minute Blues came close to stealing all three points when Corden’s hooked cross found Dan Cope and he headed agonisingly wide with his first touch after coming on as a late substitute.
